Lighthouses

One major thing the Cape Cod area is known for is its lighthouses. There are more than a dozen beautiful lighthouses to explore all over the cape. Many are historical and give you a look out onto the beautiful waters that surround the area. Some of the lighthouses, like the Race Point Lighthouse, require a walk through some of Cape Cod’s sandy beaches to gain access to. Others, like the Highland Lighthouse are still operational—this one in particular is the oldest lighthouse in Cape Cod.

You’ll find this massive monument towering over Provincetown as the star of the skyline here. This is a must see for anyone visiting Cape Cod who loves history, the more than 250-foot-tall structure is the tallest all-granite tower in the United States. It takes about 10 minutes to climb to the top of the tower and see the beautiful view over Provincetown. At the base, you’ll find the Provincetown Museum, full of historical facts and exhibits about the area. The tower and the museum are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

There are so many little towns to explore on Cape Cod as well — it’s one of the things that makes the area so unique and exciting.

If you’re looking for history, you’ll want to explore the quaint towns along the Cape’s northern shoreline. The towns of Dennis, Brewster and others will give you a real feel of Old Cape Cod. The streets, shops, and local museums are filled with the history of the area.

There are numerous family-friendly activities in Cape Cod. If you’re looking for walkability, things to do, and other entertainment you’ll want to head to the southern shoreline. Take a walk, run, or rent some bikes with the family to explore this 22-mile paved trail that runs through many parts of Cape Cod. Take a day to meander along the trail and see snippets of Cape Cod’s unique ecosystems. Venture along some of the most beautiful beaches the area has to offer. The trailheads are open from dawn to dusk, with the main access points located in the towns of Dennis and Wellfleet. There are also plenty of places to hop on the trail in the middle.
